The imposition of kinesiology tape on the lumbar area

Lumbar spine
Indications: intervertebral hernia, intervertebral protrusion, rehabilitation after surgery, pain in the lower back

1. For this application we need 6 I-tapes of different length. The length of the pieces directly depends on patient’s anatomic features.
2. Apply the first three tapes in parallel to each other using ligament method in the region of sacroiliac joint and L3–L5.
3. Apply the fourth tape with a 15 % tension from distal part of sacrum upwards along spinous processes.
4. Apply the fifth and sixth tapes with a 15 % tension according to the anatomy of iliac crest towards groin.

Lumbar spine (2 variants)
Indications: Spinal disc protrusion, Spinal disc herniation, rehabilitation after surgery, pain in the lower back

1. For this application, we need five I-tapes of different length. The length and number of the pieces directly depends on patient’s anatomic features.
2. Measure and cut two tapes equal in length. Ask the patient for a maximal bending of his/her body forward.
3. Apply the tape base on sacrum. Apply the tape in parallel direction to spinous processes on the spine extensor muscles with a 15 % tension.
4. Apply another three tapes in parallel using ligament method in the region of the sacroiliac joint and L3–L5.

Erector spinae muscles
Indications: Lumbago, correction of posture, difficulty and pain upon straighten in the lumbar spine, pain in the lower spine

1. Measure and cut two tapes equal in length. The length of 15-20 cm, depending on patient’s anatomic features.
2. Apply the base of the first tape on sacrum.
3. Apply the tape with a 15 % tension in parallel to spinous processes of vertebra.
4. Apply the second tape identically — in parallel to the first one and spinous processes, without covering them.
5. Apply the tape anchors without tension.

Spinal disc herniation
Indications: Intervertebral hernia of lumbar spine, protrusion of lumbar spine, pain in the lower back

1. Using ligament method, apply the first tape along the erector muscle of the spine. Apply the centre of the tape in the projection of hernia.
2. Apply the second tape horizontally, so that the combination forms criss-cross.
3. Using ligament method, apply the third and the fourth tapes in diagonal direction.

Stabilization of the lumbar spine
Indications: Instability in lumbar spine, pain in the lower back, intervertebral hernia of the lumbar spine, protrusion of lumbar spine

1. Measure and cut four tapes equal in length. The length of 25-30 cm, depending on patient’s anatomic features.
2. The patient bends his/her body to the front from standing position.
3. Apply the bases of the first two tapes in the region of L5-S1 without tension. Then apply the tapes with a 15 % tension in parallel to spinous processes of vertebra.
4. Apply the third and the fourth tapes using ligament method like a criss-cross with crossing in the region of maximal discomfort.
5. When the patient straightens his/her body, folds appear on the tape. This shows us that skin and connective tissues raise, and this was our aim.

Body stabilisation
Indications: Pain the lower back, hypertonic extensors

1. Measure and cut four tapes equal in length. The length of 15-20 cm, depending on patient’s anatomic features.
2. Ask the patient for a maximal bending of his/her body forward.
3. Apply the base of the first tape on sacrum, then apply the tape in parallel to spinous processes of vertebra, with a 15 % tension.
4. Apply the second tape identically — in parallel to the first one and spinous processes. Apply the tape anchors without tension.
5. Apply the third and the fourth tapes with a 15 % tension according to the anatomy of iliac crest towards groin.
